The discovery of the mutilated body of a 10-year-old boy Thursday evening in north Kashmir's Kupwara district three days after he went missing has triggered shock and anger across the valley and calls for police to solve the murder at earliest.

Police have filed a murder case and constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to be headed by the additional superintendent of police, Kupwara. Senior superintendent of police Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar will supervise the probe.

Umar Farooq, a third standard student, had gone missing after he left home for the market in Gulgam village of Kupwara on Monday afternoon. Police registered a murder case after his horribly mutilated body was found by locals in a stream on Thursday evening not far from his home.

Locals said that the boy's body was found naked, partially burnt and his left arm was missing. Police said that the body was putrefied.

"We have filed a murder case and constituted a SIT. This is a very horrific crime and we will leave no stone unturned to get to the roots of it," Dinkar said.

Asked about the possible motives of the murder, the official said that it was too early to speculate. "We are working on all angles," the SSP said.

The boy is survived by his father who is a labourer, mother who is a peon in a school and seven sisters between 15 to 28 years of age.

The death has shocked the people across the valley. Businesses and shops were closed and traffic movement was thin in Kupwara district as people observed a shutdown against the murder. The district administration closed Kupwara and Sogam colleges and suspended internet services to prevent any spill over of anger.

A policeman was injured in a scuffle with some youth protesting the minor's murder.

"The family should remain strong. Umar will never come back now. The only thing we want is that the investigations happen in a fair manner. The pain we are suffering will ease when the murderer will be unmasked. This criminal is the murderer of humanity," a relative of Umar told reporters.

Director General of Police, Shesh Paul Vaid expressed his pain and promised to crack the case soon after tweets by Peoples Conference president and MLA Handwara Sajad Lone who then thanked the police chief for setting up an SIT.

"‏Thanks @spvaid for constituting SIT. The perpetrators of this brutal horrendous act have to be punished. I am a father of two young children. Whole night was thinking about his final moments-the blows rained on him severing his arm and burning the face," Lone wrote.

Former chief minister and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti also took to Twitter to say she was shocked by the savage attack. "The charred and disfigured body of a ten year old minor found in Kupwara is savage beyond imagination. If this doesn't shake the faith of our society what will?" she tweeted.
