TURA, Nov 3, 2017: An alert CRPF sentry's presence of mind led to the timely dousing of a fire that broke out in the Dakopgre area of the town late night yesterday. The fire took place in the adjoining building to the 120 BN CRPF camp in the area with the battalion personnel getting down quickly to work and ensuring the fire did not cause extensive damage.

The incident occurred while the town was observing All Souls Day.

The fire broke out in a market complex and the sentry promptly informed the battalion authorities.

"Immediately a water truck and fire fighting party of the battalion rushed towards the site and controlled the fire by cutting off and cordoning the area. The unit Control Room informed the city fire brigade service and electricity department. Two fire engines along with CRPF party and water truck at about 12:30 am were able to extinguish the fire that started from 22:40 pm," said a release from the CRPF personnel.

Five shops were burnt and destroyed in the process.

"A huge calamity was averted by the joint efforts made by both as the shops included lubricants, gas cylinders, tyres etc, which are highly inflammable in nature," added the release.

The situation was reviewed later by the battalion commandant BC Dalbehara with the Firemen and the CRPF receiving praise for their prompt efforts from the administration. Later, South Tura MLA, John Leslee K Sangma too appreciated the efforts of the firefighters after a visit to the site of the incident.

Investigation on the cause of the fire are currently underway.
