Disc Jockey (DJ), is someone who mixes recorded music, makes a beat out of it and hypes up the audience. Most of them specialise in a specific genre like techno, house, and hip hop music. The DJs do all the hard work to make sure the audience is sweating it on the dance floor.

DJing as a career has grown at a fast pace now. This profession has become a source of livelihood for many. Several of them have become DJ legends now, while some have a problem sustaining it.

For someone who dreams to pursue this career, in this week’s TWTE- Talk with the Expert, we spoke to Tripura’s first DJ Rislyn Debbarma to know more about this profession.

TNT: What are the things one should know before choosing DJing as a career?

Rislyn Debbarma: First, one should believe that one can do it. No matter how hard the situation gets, never give up.

There will be days when you feel low on your career, no gigs, no income at times, people judging you and all that. But just hold on and keep preparing yourself for the next, even if you don’t know when that will be. Prepare yourself to be what you want to be.

TNT: What are the best institutes to pursue DJing in India?

Rislyn Debbarma: I think all the institutes give you the same space for learning and practising. It’s up to you how you utilise it and how much you give yourself to DJing.

However, if I have to take names of institutes in Bangalore, I would say Mix Music Academy, Resonance Academy and The Music School.

TNT: How do you deal with criticism?

Rislyn Debbarma: I started taking criticisms as bricks thrown towards me for building my foundation. I will climb up, and one day, I will enjoy the view from the top.

To be honest, I don’t let criticism pull me down.

TNT: Advice to the people who want to take up DJing as a career.

Rislyn Debbarma: My advice would be - be a good human being and enjoy DJing. It is the happiest and healing career ever.
