Talk with the Expert | Keratin treatment with Rachel Nongkhlaw
By Ladiangti Rani and Laxmi Chyrmang | SHILLONG:
Our hair is the one thing that can make or break our looks and can also alter our mood and confidence. It is unlikely that our hair will look perfect all the time. Especially if we sport out natural hair, and let it air dry without any heat styling. Sometimes the quickest option is to straighten or curl our hair, but heat is usually not our friend.
TNT: What is the difference between Keratin and Rebonding?
Rachel Nongkhlaw: Keratin is a natural protein found in hair. Unlike Rebonding, Keratin helps to repair the hair and make it smoother and healthier. Keratin hair treatment is highly beneficial for people with damaged hair due to other chemical treatments such as colouring and straightening.
Keratin will help make the hair stronger and shinier and would also cut down your styling time by half as it makes the hair about 40 per cent smoother.
If you use the right keratin shampoo and conditioner, Keratin hair treatment will last for about 6-8 months.
TNT: What are the other ways to protect hair, especially chemically straightened hair?
Rachel Nongkhlaw: Other ways to protect hair is by nourishing it through treatments, and what most people might not realise is that the food that we take also affects our hair.
Food such as avocados, eggs, nuts and berries are a great source of protein and vitamins that will help keep hair healthy and strong. Using a good quality hair masque with a low pH is highly recommended, especially for chemically treated hair. I would highly recommend people to get a hair spa at least once a month.
It is also important, especially for chemically treated hair, to not over-wash the hair. I would recommend that you wash chemically treated hair a maximum of three times a week and never skip on your conditioner as it helps bring back the pH balance of your hair after hair wash.
Another useful tip is to use heat protection every time you use heat to style your hair and use a serum and a tangle teaser to detangle the hair.
TNT: How many times should one do Keratin?
Rachel Nongkhlaw: Since keratin hair treatment washes out every single time you wash your hair, the treatment will last for about 6-8 months. Therefore, it is recommended that clients do this treatment at least twice a year with a six-month gap.
TNT: Why is it needed?
Rachel Nongkhlaw: chemically-treated hair loses its natural keratin. Therefore, by opting for keratin hair treatment, the hair will be coated with the keratin, and in that way, the hair will be repaired.
TNT: Are there any side effects?
Rachel Nongkhlaw: Some people are allergic to the treatment, and therefore, it is important to test the chemical out on the skin first before trying. I would also not recommend keratin treatment for pregnant women. One has to make sure that the place is properly ventilated while performing the treatment.
