Chloe Zhao made history at the 93rd Academy Awards as the first woman of colour to win the Oscar for Best Director for Nomadland.

Zhao’s 108-minute earned six nominations, winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Frances McDormand.

Nomadland stars McDormand as a van dwelling woman who leaves her hometown after her husband dies to travel around the United States.

Speaking at the 93rd Academy Awards held at the Los Angeles’ Union Station on April 25, Zhao said, “This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves and to hold on to the goodness in each other.”

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas announced the nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards on March 15, 2021, in a global Livestream on the official website.

At 83 years old, Anthony Hopkins became the oldest winner in any category for his Best Actor win.   Frances McDormand became the seventh person to win a third acting Oscar for her Best Actress win.
