Meghalaya: UDP unlikely to support PDF chief’s proposal of ‘common candidate’ for Ranikor bypoll

By Our Reporter, TNT News | Shillong, July 11, 2018:
The hope of People's Democratic Front (PDF) chairman, Pynshngain N Syiem of getting the support of the United Democratic Party (UDP) to project him as the "common candidate" for the Ranikor by-election looks uncertain.
Even though the UDP has not given its final word on whether to support the PDF chief as the consensus candidate or not, the UDP party leadership, during the meeting on Tuesday to deliberate on the consensus candidate, had stated that it is too late for Syiem to contest the by-election since Ranikor is a huge constituency.
While replying to a query on the possibilities of projecting the PDF chief as the common candidate, UDP senior leader Bindo Mathew Lanong said that the majority of the people of the constituency have realized during the meeting that it is too late for Syiem to contest the by-election.
"We need to understand that many of the areas will have to be covered by foot during the election campaign. We will have to look into whether the common candidate whom they would project would be able to cover the whole constituency," Lanong said while talking to reporters after the meeting.
According to Lanong, the party will brief on the minutes of this meeting to the party president, Dr Donkupar Roy. "I am of the view that both the candidates (PN Syiem and Pius Marwein) should be invited before taking a final call on the consensus candidate," Lanong said.
The UDP senior leader said that majority of the leaders and supporters of the various political parties in Ranikor constituency are in favour of having a 'common candidate' to defeat NPP official candidate Martin M Danggo.
The supporters of UDP, PDF and BJP were present during a meeting on the by-election at the official residence of UDP president, Donkupar Roy on Tuesday in which UDP's aspiring candidate, Pius Marwein and PDF MDC PN Syiem were present.
