Meghalaya: GHADC in for more drama as 4 MDCs including Dy Chairman join BJP

TURA | Dec 1, 2019:

The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) continues to witness high drama after four MDCs including the newly elected Deputy Chairman, Mettrinson G Momin, formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a ceremony yesterday.

The three other MDCs include former CEM, Boston Marak (UDP), Jimberth Goera Marak (GNC) and Wenison Marak (GNC). The 4 MDCs joined the party in the presence of BJP stalwart, Nalin Kohli, who welcomed them to the folds of the party.

This move will likely set the cat amongst the pigeons as Momin, who won the election to the Deputy Chairman after defeating the candidate of the NPP led coalition 15-13, was backed by the Congress-led Opposition and while it was expected that he would join the grand old party after being impeached by the NPP, Momin's decision to join the saffron party, however, came as a shock to many.

Furthermore, the movement of the MDCs to the BJP has now seemingly confirmed the allegations of the Balachanda MDC, Sofiur Rehman, who earlier through a statement, had said that the GHADC is witnessing the BJP supporting the Congress' move in attempting to bring down the NPP led EC a few days ago.

On Wednesday, Nov 27, the GHADC had seen high drama after the Congress led Opposition won the election to the deputy chairman against the NPP led candidate, Augustine Marak.

The election was supposed to be followed by a no confidence vote against the EC. However, fearing the inevitable, the NPP led members staged a walkout.
