NEW DELHI:

Female candidates aspiring to join the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA) can do so from May 2022, the centre said on Tuesday.

The NDA is being prepared in this regard, with appropriate physical standards being formulated for women candidates by experts, the centre informed while highlighting the necessary infrastructure requirements to put up with additional cadets.

The centre also informed that while there were no parallel (physical) standards for women candidates, these are being formulated, and they will greatly differ from those applied to men for selection.

The decision to induct women candidates in NDA came after the Supreme Court underlined "mindset problem" and gender discrimination" when it came to equal opportunities for women in the armed forces.

Responding to a petition earlier, the court argued categorical exclusion of women from NDA was 'unconstitutional' that needed formulation.

Notably, last year, the court has stated that women in the army can get command positions and permanent commissions at par with men.
