NEW DELHI | October 9, 2019:

Good news for central government employees as Union Minister Prakash Javadekar had announced on Wednesday that the Dearness Allowance (DA) will be increased from 12% to 17%.

Addressing the media after the cabinet meeting today, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar said that around 50 lakh central government employees and 62 lakh pensioners would benefit from the decision.

Javadekar noted that previously DA had been raised by 2-3 per cent but this time it has been raised by 5 per cent in one go.

The increment in the DA will put an extra burden of Rs 16,000 crore on the government's spending.

"This is a Diwali gift to government employees," Javadekar said.

The raise in DA would cost the government Rs 16,000 crore in its wage bill and the increased DA would be effective from July 2019.
