Strong quake hits Turkey's Aegean Coast & Greek Island; four dead, 120 injured

ISTANBUL:

At least four people died and several people sustained injuries after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck between the Turkish coast and the Greek island of Samos on Friday.

Incidents of building collapse were reported in Turkey's western Izmir province and some damages were also reported from Samos.

Turkey's Health Minister Fahrettin Koca, in a tweet, confirmed the death of four people in Izmir. He also said that 120 people were affected by the quake.

38 ambulances, two ambulance helicopters and 35 medical rescue teams were working in Izmir, he tweeted.

"We stand by the people of Izmir with all our support. Sorry for your loss," Koca said.

Turkish officials and broadcasters called on people to stay off the streets after reports of traffic congestion.
