Over 70 million Americans cast ballots in presidential election

With one week to go until Election Day, over 70 million Americans have cast ballots in this year’s presidential election - more than half the total turnout in 2016.

The tally is enough to portray the intense interest in the contest between Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden. It also highlights voters’ desire to risk exposure to COVID-19.

Some experts predict a record US voter turnout of about 150 million, representing 65 per cent of those eligible to vote, the highest since 1908.
