AGARTALA: A woman police officer was found guilty on the charge of taking bribe from a rape victim's family and was awarded three-year imprisonment, a senior police officer revealed today.

Shambika Paul was the investigation officer of the rape case in July, 2013 at Modhupur in Bishalgarh Sub Division in Sepahijala District.

The victim's family raised allegation that the assistant police officer demanded Rs. 9000 from them to give justice to her. She also warned them to release the rape accused on bail if they refuse to her proposal. Afraid of the consequence, the victim's family paid the amount to Shambika. But the rape accused got interim bail from the court.

Later, the rape victim's family lodged a complaint against Shambika in Bishalgarh Police Station. Accordingly, the department started enquiry and found evidence against her in the bribery case.

Following a prolonged hearing at the court, she was found guilty and was sent her to imprisonment for three years.
