Spells of light rains to continue over NE India, to intensify around July 4
NORTHEAST INDIA | July 30, 2019:
It has been raining in Northeast India since the Monsoon made an onset over the region. Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have been recording heavy to very heavy rains.
In the past 24 hours, very active Monsoon activities were seen over most parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, while normal rains were seen over remaining places. While isolated yet vigorous activities were seen over West Assam and Tripura. North Lakhimpur witnessed 15.2 mm of rain while Cherrapunji saw 23.8 mm of rain.
Also, a Trough is extending from North Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim up to the North Bay of Bengal. Meteorologists anticipate a Low-Pressure Area to form over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining the southern parts of West Bengal. Rainfall activity is likely to decrease from most parts of North East and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
However, light to moderate rains will continue at many places with isolated heavy spells. The hills of Northeast India will start witnessing a decreasing trend in the rainfall activities starting today and would continue so for the next three to four days.

The next spell of good rains is likely to pick up pace around July 4 due to a trough which would move over the Northern parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim across Assam and its adjoining areas. Then the southerly and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal will strengthen and reach the Northeastern states. Thus resulting in heavy rains for a couple of days.
Despite heavy rains in the last few days, Northeast India is still deficit by 36%. The actual rains till date have been recorded to the tune of 205.5 mm against the normal of 319.5 mm. Looks like the month of June for the northeastern states of the country would end on a deficient note.
