Nagaland by-poll: BJP's Liromong announced as PDA's consensus candidate for Pungro assembly seat

The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland on Wednesday, announced BJP's Liromong Sangtam as a consensus candidate of the People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) for the upcoming by-poll to the 60-Pungro-Kiphire Assembly constituency.

The by-poll to the two assembly seats -- Southern Angami and Pungro-Kiphire in Nagaland is scheduled to be held on November 3 and counting on November 10.

This was announced by NDPP general secretary Abu Metha during the ticket distribution ceremony held at the state BJP office in Kohima on Wednesday. 

In his address, Metha admitted that NDPP was keen to set up a candidate in 60-Pungro, however, after a series of discussions, the party agreed to put up a consensus candidate, maintaining the pre-poll seat-sharing formula with BJP.

He said the BJP candidate has the support of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and the NDPP party. "NDPP is happy to be a part of the alliance," he added.

State BJP president Temjen Imna Along, in his address, said setting up a consensus candidate shows the magnanimous relationship of the PDA to "uplift the people of Nagaland".

He said workers of both the parties would work together to ensure victory in the constituency.

The BJP has also extended its support to the NDPP in the poll battle for the 14-Southern Angami seat.

The PDA candidate Liromong Sangtam thanked the party for allotting the ticket to him while assuring to put in all effort to win the by-poll.

Lirimong Sangtam will file his nomination on October 16.
