The Congress Party in Mizoram suffered another jolt after thirteen of its members joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday ahead of the Assembly elections.

The thirteen members belonged to the ruling Congress in Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) in Lawngtlai district.

The LADC comprises 25 members of which eight belong to the Mizo National Front (MNF) while four are former Congress members, who had resigned from the party last week.

While talking to the Hindustan Times, Mizoram BJP president, Vanlalhmuaka said, “All ruling Congress members of LADC led by the Chief Executive Member (CEM) T Zakunga have joined BJP and formed a government of our party. The LADC is headed for an election in the last week of November.”

“This is a significant boost for our party, as all the three ADCs were Congress strongholds earlier. With the developments seen in the last years, Congress has been systematically removed from the ADC areas by BJP,” Vanlalhmuaka added.

Two of the three autonomous districts council, ruled by the Mizo National Front (MNF), are under BJP while MNF is in power in the Chakma ADC, while the Mara ADC is under the BJP rule.

In 2018 Assembly polls, the BJP had set its foot when BD Chakma became the first MLA from the party in Mizoram. Although MNF is a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at Centre, the party doesn’t have any tie-up with BJP in Mizoram.
