Meghalaya: Husband arrested for wife’s mysterious death

TURA:

Residents of Borshibandha village recovered the body of a 22-year-old woman from a pond on Monday.

According to reports, the pond in question was only knee-deep, and many are pointing their fingers at the family of the woman’s husband, following which the victim’s family lodged an FIR against them on charges of complicity to murder.

Police arrested the victim’s husband, identified as Hashibul after complaints of foul play surfaced.

According to the FIR, the victim identified as Amisha Begum drowned in a river near her house in Borshibandha. However, when they (the victim’s family) reached the spot, they found the victim’s husband and his family members at the scene.

According to sources, the victim drowned in knee-deep water but, when they fished out her body, her tongue was out of her mouth, which showed foul play.

“When we asked them what happened, they told us that Amisha had sunk into the river and drowned. However, it is not a river but water collected because of rains in agricultural land. How can she drown in such a place? It is just cultivated land where rainwater has been blocked,” stated the FIR.

The FIR by the family accused Hashibul and his family of foul play and murder and sought an investigation into the matter.

They further alleged that the husband and his family had tortured the victim before the murder.

West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, MGR Kumar, said that the matter is under investigation.

“Prima facie, there seems foul play involved. A case has been registered and we are investigating the matter. The husband has been arrested and questioning is on,” Kumar said.

Meanwhile, the body was sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
