MEGHALAYA: Base laid for Farmers' Market at Jengjal in West Garo Hills

Meghalaya Power Minister James PK Sangma on Thursday laid the Foundation Stone for the Farmers’ Market Complex at Jengjal in West Garo Hills.

While addressing the gathering, James Sangma expressed his gratitude to the Government of India for sanctioning an amount of 10 crore under Article 275 (1) for the construction of Farmers' Market Complex at Jengjal.

The Farmers Market at Jengjal lies in close proximity to a few important business establishments.

Stating that Meghalaya has more than 80 per cent of the population who are agrarian in nature, he said that the Government of India is focussing more on the agriculture sector to provide sustainable livelihood options to the farmers of the country and to uplift the economy of the people of the region.

Furthermore, he stated that the agriculture sector needs to be an organised sector where farmers can not only sell locally but market their products to buyers from other states and beyond.

He also stressed on the need to come up with cold storage facilities, parking spaces and other facilities in the Market Complex.

“This is not a Farmers' Shed, but Farmers' Market which will benefit the farmers of the area in future,” he said.

He urged the farmers to utilise the opportunities provided to them responsibly for the progress and development of the agriculture sector in the region.

The event was also attended by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh.
