Meghalaya: 60-yr-old man dies after being run over by truck at Umphyrnai

A 60-yr-old man died on the spot after being run over by a loaded truck at Umphyrnai near Lad Smit in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya on Thursday afternoon.

According to the police, the truck (ML05 D-0386), driven by one Slibingson Kharkongor (24) of Umphyrnai, ran over a pedestrian identified as Klom Sari (60), who was a cattle shepherd, while he was attempting to cross the road with his cattle.

"On further enquiry, it was learnt that the truck was coming from Lad Smit and proceeding towards Jowai and, the pedestrian was also heading towards the same direction; but due to rash and negligent driving, the driver hit and ran over the shepherd," police sources said.

Sources said that inquest and other necessary formalities are being observed and, the driver later surrendered at the branch and, onward action is being taken up.
