NONGSTOIN:

The Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP), Langpih area unit, expressed its vehement opposition against the setting up of a new weekly market at Langpih by the non-tribal community.

“The non-tribal market at Langpih keeps on increasing every week as it gets its support from Assam,” the FKJGP alleged.

“The intention of the non-tribal to set up a new market at Langpih is to shut down the existing Langpih market,” it added.

FKJGP general secretary Marbor Nongsiang, said that the market, run by the non-tribals, will prove to be a primary cause of misunderstanding between the locals and the non-tribal community.

He also stated that it had sparked fears in the minds of the locals that outsiders will capture that their business.

“Till date, there was no permission from the District Administration of West Khasi Hills District to reopen the weekly Langpih market, but they allow only a few shops to open,” Nongsaing said.

“It is because of this reason that the non-tribal get a chance to open the new market near the camp of Assam Police every Friday.”

The FKJGP has also urged the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills District to take up the matter seriously.
