IMPHAL:

Ahead of the Manipur by-polls, violence erupted in the poll-bound Singhat Assembly constituency on Wednesday night around 9 pm.

According to M. Suankhanmang, who is the Chief of Tangpijol village in Singhat Assembly constituency, some BJP workers, claiming to be the volunteers of Ginsuanhau Zou alias GS Haopu entered Tangpijol village from Behiang side and harassed the son of the chief.

According to reports, a scuffle broke out between the Chief's son and the BJP workers.

The BJP workers, who came in many cars, were setting up party flag in Tangpizol village when the son of the Chief started raising objections.

In an act of vengeance, a group of 50-60 people, presumably suspected to be the supporters of the independent candidate Chinlunthang, later waited for the BJP party workers to return from Tangpijol in M Lunmual village and started attacking them.

It was informed that at least five BJP workers sustained injuries in the attack but somehow managed to escape.

The Chief of a nearby Thingkangphai village in Singhat Assembly constituency has condemned the incident stating that it has created panic and restlessness among his villagers as they heard several rounds of gunshots on Wednesday night around 8.30 pm.
