IMPHAL | SEPT 10, 2020:

The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has registered a case based on a complaint filed by the Youth's Forum for Protection of Human rights against an individual who uploaded photographs of the Mayang Imphal gang-rape victim.

The act of disclosing the identity of the deceased victim violates the law under Section 23 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and 228 A of the IPC.

The commission also directed the Director-General of Police (DGP) to take necessary action against the individual who uploaded the photographs.

They also proposed organising awareness programmes through the SPs (Superintendent of Police) of every district to emphasize on the need of protecting the identity of a rape victim.

The MHRC also highlighted the need to enlighten local clubs, Meira Paibis (guardians of civil society), youths and students about Section 23 of the POCSO Act 2012 and 228 A of the IPC.

We may note that the Mayang Imphal gang-rape victim succumbed to her injuries at RIMS hospital.
Police arrested six individuals in connection to the incident.
