Campaign for the upcoming by-polls have gained momentum with the Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, former Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh and ex-Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam actively campaigning for their candidates.

Manipur goes for by-polls in five assembly constituencies, namely Wangoi, Wangjing Tentha, Lilong, Saitu-ST and Singhat-ST assembly constituencies on November 7.

The BJP has fielded four candidates in four assembly constituencies and will support ex-MLA Abdul Nasir who is contesting as an independent candidate from Lilong Assembly constituency.

Likewise, the Congress has also fielded four candidates and will not be contesting from Singhat Assembly constituency.

Earlier this week, N. Biren Singh was campaigning for ex-MLA Abdul Nasir of Lilong assembly constituency, who is contesting as an independent candidate after resigning from the Congress.

All the five seats were vacated by the Congress MLAs hours after the Biren led BJP government won the trust vote in August.

Thirteen seats are lying vacant in the 60 member legislative assembly of Manipur. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has notified only five Assembly segments for by-polls, there are court cases pending to the remaining Assembly constituencies.
