Assam: Two traffic constables suspended for misconduct on duty

Two traffic constables from Assam's Gorchuk police station have reportedly been suspended after misconduct on duty.

As per a complaint filed against two traffic constables on Wednesday, the cops involved themselves in misconduct towards a truck driver as well as extortion of money.

After the complaint, the police department set up an internal inquiry on the matter while also suspending both the constables until further notice.

As per a report in Guwahati Plus, On the evening of May 7, truck driver Ajijar Rahman along with his brother Aminur Hussain reached Guwahati with their truck laden with print papers of a national daily when they were stopped at a traffic point near Gorchuk and were subjected to verbal abuse by a traffic police constable.

The driver had allegedly crossed a 'No Entry' point and so the police jumped inside the moving vehicle and started to use cuss words. When Hussain started to film the police's behavior, his phone was snatched away and they were both taken to police station.

"At Gorchuk police station, the verbal abuse continued and I was also hit by another police constable. They snatched both our phones, the key of the truck and also took all our documents including my license," informed the driver.

He further informed that they were asked to pay Rs 3000 as fine for violation of No Entry, which is way more than the actual fine, and Rs 5000 as bribe for both the phones.

The drivers, who hail from Alipurduar, came to a settlement by paying Rs 1500 as fine and Rs 2900 as bribe for the phones.

The next day, a complaint was registered with the police department and quick action was taken.
