Assam: Couple commits suicide after celebrating Valentine’s Day at Goalpara

GUWAHATI, February 15, 2018: In a shocking incident a young couple committed suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train early on Thursday in Goalpara district, Assam.

The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Biswajit Nath and Helen Nath, 26. The incident took place between 2:30am and 3:00am at Dudhnoi, 115km west from the state capital.

As per reports, the couple belonging to neighbouring villages had been in a relationship and were together on Wednesday and celebrated Valentine's Day as well as Maha Shivratri.

They came from poor families. Biswajit, who hails from Lalaburi village, was a fourth-grade employee in an office.

Amitabh Sinha, Goalpara police chief said, "Primary investigation shows the duo was in love and wanted to get married. But the families were against that especially Biswajit's family. This could have led them to commit suicide".

No suicide note has been found.

Police have ruled out foul play and are investigating the incident. They have also been questioning their family members.
