5 kidnappers including 4 with GNLA link arrested from Meghalaya-Assam border

Assam police of South Salmara district on Saturday apprehended 5 suspected kidnappers, with four allegedly belonging to the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in an operation neat the Hat Singimari Super Market this afternoon at about 4:30 pm.

The four, along with the driver were arrested after they were found with possession of a gun as well as ammunition apparently in a bid to kidnap a businessman from the town.

The arrested criminals have been identified as Biraj D Sangma, Chengkal Marak, Sengbath D Sangma and Chanang T Sangma along with the driver, Makbul Islam.

Police revealed that one of the arrested men was from the GNLA while the others were overground workers of the outfit.

The police later recovered one Maruti Suzuki car, 1 gun, 2 rounds of ammunition and 5 phones from the possession of the group.

"We acted after information from sources of the presence of some GNLA men about to embark on kidnapping a businessman. The five have been arrested from the town of Hat Singimari when they were on the move," said additional SP of South Salmara, Rajmohan Roy.
