Sikkim: 11 communities meet DONER minister, seek ST status

GANGTOK, December 13, 2017: Eleven communities from Sikkim on Tuesday met DONER Minister Jitendra Singh, in their demand for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and also representation in the state assembly, reservations in jobs and exemption from income tax.

In a statement, Ministry of North Eastern Region Development said, "They also gave a presentation on the history, geography and other matters related to the state of Sikkim and their communities in particular".

According to the Ministry, the community that the memorandum submitted by them will be taken up with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Singh informed.

The communities consisted of Rai, Mangar, Gurung, Thami, Bhujel, Jogi, Sanyasi, Giri, Newar, Khas (Bhawn and Chettri) and Dewan (Yakha).
