QUESTION 1: Dear Daniel I am a fashion student studying in NIFT here in Shillong. I wanted to inquire about your weavers and what kind of work you do with them. This is part of a research program I am working on. Thank you. Best wishes for the New Year.
ANSWER: Hello there!! I have been working with the weavers of Ri-Bhoi district for a few years now trying to protect and promote our heritage fabric- The Ryndia. Over time we have come up with numerous collections telling stories of our culture and tradition using the Ryndia. These collections have been showcased around the world. Doing this has helped inspire our weavers to continue with weaving as we have been able to find a better and wider market for their products. QUESTION 2: Hi Daniel. Just a suggestion, how about coming up with a design for our men folk as well. Something that is traditional yet contemporary. Our Khasi women have the Jainsem/ dhara however there is nothing for us men to showoff our culture and heritage.
ANSWER: Hey thank you for your suggestion. Coincidentally I had recently worked on a design for one of our standing MLAs who had come to me with a similar suggestion. The design comprised of a Nehru Half Jacket and had the traditional embroidery from the male traditional dance waist coat sown on it along with the silver tassles stitched on the bottom. The design was well appreciated. We will be putting them out in the market soon and we hope for a positive response.
