KOHIMA, Jan 17, 2018: In a latest political development in Nagaland, Lone MP Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday formally resigned from the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF) paving the way for him to lead the newly floated Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in the upcoming assembly election in the state.
In a letter submitted to the president of NPF on Wednesday, Rio did not cite any reason for his resignation, though it is clear that he means to accept the invitation of NDPP to join the newly floated party. “I write this to inform you that I hereby resign from the primary, active and all other membership of the NPF Party with immediate effect,” Rio said in his resignation letter.
Earlier, during the day, NDPP chief Chingwang Konyak and working president Alemtenshi Jamir met Mr Rio at Dimapur on Wednesday and formally “invited” him to join the party.
“Mr Rio welcomed the appeal of the NDPP and formally accepted the invitation,” Mr Konyak said in a statement.
“Mr Rio in his interactions with the NDPP leaders acknowledged the fact that the NDPP was formed to bring positive change in Naga society and implement the vision that ensures transparency in governance, implement progressive development combat corruption,” said Mr Konyak, a former state minister and also a former MP.
It may be mentioned that when chief Minister TR Zeliang extended his support to NPF Chief Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu on December 8, Rio too followed suit and withdrew the case from Election Commission of India; On January 2, after much speculations, Rio distanced himself from the NDPP and on January 17, he quit NPF to possibly join NDPP.
