President of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Dr Donkupar Roy, a candidate of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has been elected as the Assembly Speaker after receiving 35 out of 56 votes cast.
Dr Roy defeated Congress’s candidate Winnerson Sangma, who managed to muster the support of only 20 MLAs, who are most probably all the 20 congress representatives. It may be mentioned that one vote has been considered invalid.
Meanwhile, KHNAM MLA Adelbert Nongrum did not attend the session.
This will be the first time for the UDP chief to serve as the Speaker of the Assembly. He has served as the chief minister of the state and also leader of the Opposition.
Cutting across the party lines, Legislators on Monday wished and congratulated Dr. Donkupar Roy after he was elected the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma who led the House in congratulating the new Speaker said that the immense experience which Dr. Donkupar Roy holds will provide guidance and direction to the legislators from both treasury and opposition benches.
He also said that the new Speaker will do justice to the Speaker’s post. Conrad, who was the finance minister in Dr. Donkupar Roy’s cabinet in the year 2008, said that he himself will miss the guidance of the senior legislator as he will not be in the government.
