Assam: Youth with explosives arrested in Baksa; alleged links with NDFB faction suspected!

GUWAHATI, April 19, 2017: Baksa Police, in a joint operation with security forces, nabbed a 22-year-old youth along with explosives from Hortula village, some 80 km from here, on Tuesday. Security forces have seized at least 12 grenades from his possession.

The arrested, identified as Sansar Basumatary, allegedly has links with National Democratic Front of Bodoland’s hardliner faction. The grenades were found on the premises of Sansar’s residence.

Though police are yet to confirm whether the grenades were ‘live’ or not, sources said they were identically similar to those used by security forces. “Militants in the region are usually found using Chinese-made grenades. The accused might have collected them from a nearby firing range at Darangamela, which is located near Hortula,” a source said.

Police suspect that Basumatary is part of a gunrunner’s racket. Following the 2014 massacre of innocent villagers in BTAD and Sonitpur districts by Bodo rebels, security forces launched a massive operation against NDFB(S) militants. Since then, over 400 NDFB(S) militants, including 256 active members, were arrested. More than 21 militants have been killed. “About 15 AK-56 rifles, 10 AK-47s, two M-16, two HKs, seven Insas rifles, 495 rounds of ammunition, 21 grenades, 81kg of explosives, Rs 14 lakh in cash and 12 motorcycles have been seized from militants earlier,” a source said. The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing into the attack on Adivasis by NDFB(S) rebels, has framed charges against 60 miltiants.
