Assam: Young children rescued from wedlock in Boko

Guwahati, March 20, 2017:  The practice of child marriage is prevalent in the country for centuries, leaving children married off before their physical and mental maturity. The continued efforts of law enforcement, the intervention of NGO’s to prevent this gross violation of human rights however still faces challenges till today where five girls were rescued from child marriage in the last month from Boko area in  Kamrup district, which is  60 km from Guwahati.

On March 18, a fresh case was reported where a 13 year old girl, who had just been married off last week, was rescued by a unit of Childline in Boko and Mandira police station from the Jogiparapathar area.

 “Her mother-in-law Azirun Bibi was arrested under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The groom and others in the family are absconding,” said Muklesur Rahman, coordinator of Childline Boko unit.
