Sonitpur : Seeing light is a big time dream for the 400-odd families of New Jamuguri and Old Jamuguri villages in Assam’s Sonitpur district. These villages are under the cover of dark with the Dhalaguri Panchayat in Barchalla Assembly constituency not having seen an electric bulb glow for the past 10 years.
The situation continues though a new government took up the reins in the state last year and BJP MLA Ganesh Kumar Limbu came to power in Barchalla, defeating former Speaker Tanka Bahadur Rai. The Centre’s claim of 100 per cent electrification in villages across the country under its Atal Jyoti Abhiyan, is nothing more than a living illusion for inhabitants of the two villages, which adjoin the state power minister Pallab Lochan Das’s Rangapara constituency.
The only fuel for light in the villages being kerosene, which comes at an exorbitant price in the black market, television, computer, modern home appliances and pure drinking water are some of the modern day amenities which are alien objects for the villagers.
Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd records say the villages have power supply. In reality, there is hardly a trace of power supply infrastructure in the villages. The erstwhile Assam State Electricity Board had set up the infrastructure but it was stolen taking advantage of long interruptions in power supply.
“This was the situation 10 years ago, during the Congress regime. No effort was made to restore power to these villages. I wrote to the authorities about the two villages and a few others soon after I was elected. We will definitely fulfill our government’s commitment to cover all the areas of the state under the Atal Jyoti Abhiyan Scheme. Uninterrupted power will be supplied to every village by 2019.”
