Assam: Village leader shot dead by Ulfa-I rebels

GUWAHATI, January 8, 2018: Local village defence party (VDP) president shot dead by Suspected Ulfa (Independent) militants at Dirak-Hunjan village in Bordumsa in Tinsukia district which is close to Assam-Arunachal border on Monday. The incident occurred at around 7.30pm.

The deceased identified as Anteswar Mahanta and his son Arun, a former leader of the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu), was also seriously injured in the gunfire and later died at the Tinsukia civil hospital.

Tinsukia SP Mugdhajyoti Mahanta said a group of 4-5 armed militants dressed in Army fatigues came to Mahanta’s house of Mahanta and called him outside. As soon as he stepped out, the militants fired at him indiscriminately. His son rushed out hearing gunfire and was hit by the hail of bullets. He also died at the hospital later.

The SP also said “We suspect the hand of Ulfa (I) behind the incident. A group led by Ulfa (I) militant Uday Asom has been active in the area. We have launched a massive search operation in search of the militants”.

Five spent of AK-47 cartridges rifle were recovered at the site.
