Assam: Two police officers arrested in connection with 2009 murder case

Guwahati | December 7, 2017

Two Assam police officers who were arrested in connection with a murder case in 2009 were remanded to judicial custody on Thursday.

Harakanta Doloi, his wife and four children were found dead at their home at Jogdol under Sonapur police station on the morning of December 13, 2009. Two children were found beheaded.

Protests across the state over the gruesome murders prompted the Congress government in the state to handover the case to CID in 2012.

Pranab Kumar Deka, who was officer-in-charge of Sonapur police station in 2009 and Abdul Matlib Choudhury, a sub inspector who was the investigating officer of the case were arrested by CID on Wednesday evening on charges of destruction of evidence of the case. Deka is now the OC of Azara police statiin and Choudhury is a sub inspector in the same police station.

The case took a political turn with many alleging the involvement of former Congress minister Akon Bora who is an MLA from Dispur Assembly constituency. Bora denied the allegations.

Arjun Bordoloi, a suspect in the case was found dead in September 2012 close to the crime scene.

The CID had registered a case against Deka and Choudhury in 2012. Investigation revealed that both Deka and Choudhury had visited the crime scene a day after the incident and enaged a person to set Doloi’s house on fire in order to destroy evidence.

Dulal Bora, an RTI activist here demanded that Akon Bora be brought under the ambit of the CID investigation to unravel the mystery of the murder which has remained inconclusive in the past eight years. He alleged that Bora is the mastermind behind the gruesome killings.
