The second Saraighat bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Guwahati with lower Assam will officially be opened on January 28 next. This decision was taken today during a meeting of the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The bridge will be officially opened for traffic by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Incidentally, the new bridge was scheduled to be inaugurated by January 1 last. However, the government decided to postpone its inauguration since ancient beliefs say it is inauspicious to carry out important projects and religious works in the Assamese month of ‘Puh’. The State cabinet also decided to fast-track the metro rail project and the initial work will begin in four phases, the first phase being the LGBI-Narengi metro rail route. The Detail Project Report (DPR) has also been readied, Assam Government spokesperson and Industries Minister Chandramohan Patowary said after the end of the cabinet meet.
