Assam Rifles jawan killed in Manipur encounter

IMPHAL: An Assam Rifles(AR) personnel was killed and a civilian injured in an encounter with suspected militants even as the Election Commission of India(ECI) announced the assembly poll dates for five states, including trouble-torn Manipur.

The encounter took place in the hilly area of Khunthak village in Ukhrul district.

A top official while speaking to newsmen said that suspected militants attacked the Assam Rifles jawans when they were on foot patrolling in the remote area. The troops retaliated but the militants managed to escape by taking advantage of the hilly terrain.

A civilian was injured after getting caught in the crossfire.

The jawan, who died in the attack, has been identified as Bhupal Singh.

The poll- bound state has faced an economic blockade imposed by the United Naga Council (UNC) since November 1.
