GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday while reacting to Guwahati High Court stay order in public distribution of welfare items said that the Bhartiya Janata Party(BJP) was trying to manipulate the whole issue by simply saying that no yarns and blankets would be distributed under the scheme.
He said, “The Gauhati High Court has no problem with us in distributing the items. But it has said the distribution should be done in a proper manner.”
A division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice Manojit Bhuyan stayed the public distribution of tractors, power tillers, yarns and blankets by the State Government after hearing a public interest litigation filed by the Assam Public Works (APW), a local NGO.
With the Assam assembly elections round the corner, the ruling Congress suffered a major blow with the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday restricting the State government’s scheme of distributing yarn, blankets, tractors and power tillers among beneficiaries.
The PIL (No. 13/2016) was filed alleging that the schemes for public distribution of tractors, power tillers, yarns and blankets have not been notified in newspapers although funds for the said articles have been sanctioned in the month of December, 2015 and some of the articles are being distributed to the beneficiaries by pick and choose method.
It is mention worthy that on Tuesday; Assam Minister Rokibul Hussain faced the wrath of students and teachers when he took over the playground of Samaguri High School in the middle of a school week.
Raged students and teachers blocked the roads as a mark of protest after Congress members came to distribute yarns and blankets to the people of the area when the annual sorts week was going on in the school. later the team had to cancel the programme of distribution of the goods.
