The opposition Congress in Assam on Thursday walked out of the Assembly alleging the BJP led government’s failure to maintain law and order, a day after a trader was shot dead in Guwahati.
Congress MLA Abdul Khaleque who raised the issue in the Assembly said killing of a businessman in the heart of the city highlighted the government’s failure to maintain law and order in the state.
The Opposition party MLAs shouted on the floor and demanded adjournment of the Assembly routine activities for a discussion on the prevailing law and order situation. The adjournment motion, however, was disallowed by the Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami saying the incident did not suggest that there was a complete breakdown of the law and order system and the opposition parties could bring the matter for a discussion through other devices.
It may be recalled that a 38-year-old businessman was shot dead at Hatigaon area here around 8.30pm on Wednesday.
The victim, identified as Hemant Charcharia was returning from his grocery shop at Kailash Nagar area under Hatigaon police station.
Killing of a trader in the middle of the city has left many shocked and raised question about security arrangement in the city.
