It was a Valentine’s Day with a difference in poll-bound Meghalaya this time round and the receivers of the roses and gifts were none other than the leaders of the political parties all set for the February 27 assembly election.
This Valentine’s Day in Shillong, the political parties in the state contesting the ensuing election were greeted with “Bread & Roses Campaign” served by the 13 Workers Unions, Hawkers Association and TUR who also presented the Working People’s Charter for Meghalaya Elections 2018 along with an empty rice plate and a rose.
“This campaign was initiated to impress upon the political parties –national and regional a need to address labour problems in Meghalaya,’ TUR member Angela Rangad said while addressing media persons here on Wednesday.
The 13 Workers Unions, Hawkers Association and TUR first released the Working People’s Charter for Meghalaya Elections 2018 as part of “Bread & Roses Campaign”.
They said that the workers don’t only need “Bread” but they need dignity and a life full of possibilities. In the charter the organizations called on the political parties to address their issues by way of strengthening and implementing already existing legal rights and framing new policies and legislations for the protection and uplift of the working people.
This charter was developed in a consultative and participatory manner to put the issues of working people from organized, unorganized and agricultural sector.
The organizations also gave a deadline to the various political parties to endorse this charter and sought for a public acknowledgement by 20th February 2018 as an indication of their commitment to the issues raised. They shall be making public, various parties’ commitment or non-commitment to the same.
