Tuluni festival is of great significance for the Sumi tribe of Nagaland. One of the most united tribes, the Sumis celebrate it with merry-making and is marked with feasts as the occasion occurs in the bountiful season of the year.

Here are five interesting features about the Tuluni festival:

TULUNI, THE RICE BEVERAGE

Rice-beer

Tuluni is actually the name of the local rice beer which is an indispensable part of the festival.

 

FESTIVAL OF ABUNDANCE 

Crops

Tuluni is also called “Anni” which denotes the season of abundant crops.

 

PORK EATING COMPETITION

Pork

Pork Eating Competition is a common game played in this festival. The meat (Pork) is hung from the ceiling and the person who manages to consume the largest chunk is the winner.

 

FESTIVALS AND MARRIAGE

Marriage

To make the festival more joyous engaged couples get married or the fiancé is invited over to the finacee’s place and they exchange gifts and all the guests are fed lavishly with delicious food.

 

SWU (SUMI) AND TUKU (TUKUMI)

Sümis have two different clan-heads, viz. Swu (Sumi) and Tuku (Tukumi). By virtue of two separate clans the festival and rituals differs between Sumi and Tukumi. Among all other festivals , Sumis in general accepted the festival of Tuluni as the most grand and important one.
