5 facts to know about the 1st Northeast Indian Judge who is slated to become Chief Justice of India!

Northeast India, that was initially looked upon as a region cut out from the rest of the country in many spheres has time and again given infinite reason to the country to be proud of its people and this time again, a judge from the region is slated to become the next Chief Justice of India which puts the region again at the limelight. He is in line to become the Chief Justice of India in October 2018, succeeding Justice Dipak Misra, as the senior most judge of the Court. He will be the first judge from India’s North East to hold that post. Here are 5 facts you need to know about Justice Ranjan Gogoi :

#1. Born on 18th November, 1954, Ranjan Gogoi joined the Bar in 1978. He practiced mainly in the Gauhati High Court. He was appointed as Permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court on 28th February, 2001 and transferred to Punjab & Haryana High Court on 9th September, 2010. He was appointed as Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court on 12th February, 2011 and was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court on 23rd April, 2012.

#2. His father Keshab Chandra Gogoi was a former Chief Minister of Assam.

#3. However, on January 12 in an unprecedented move, Ranjan Gogoi along with four other SC judges took to the media saying that the administration of the Supreme Court “has not been in order”.

#4. Ranjan Gogoi’s participation in the country’s legal history was particulary notable — he was/is (as of now) slated to take up the role of the Chief Justice of India following Justice Dipak Misra’s tenure.

#5. Justice Gogoi took part in the hearings pertaining to the Sahara group and the Aamby Valley auction, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and a ruling which said politicians would not be allowed to use public funding for campaigning.
