SHILLONG: Now you no longer have to visit Japan or USA for the Cherry Blossom Festival. The much awaited Cherry Blossom Festival 2016 which will take place from November 14 to 17 would be India’s and Shillong’s first. This would also be the first of its kind in the world for cherry trees found in other countries usually bloom during March- April. This cherry blossom festival at Shillong, however, will make its mark as the first international cherry blossom festival in the world to be celebrated during autumn which would enhance Meghalaya’s place on the global tourist map.
India’s first Cherry Blossom Festival 2016 is in sync with the Government of Meghalaya’s push for “Destination Meghalaya”. This is the only Autumn cherry blossom festival in the world to be held in Shillong, Meghalaya this November 2016, coincides with Children’s Day (November 14, 2016), This will be organized by Government of Meghalaya in association with the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Government of India which will showcase Meghalaya’s rich arts and culture and several places of interest that Meghalaya is famous for. The Festival will kick off with an opening ceremony featuring cultural programmes and the other events include archery, drum beating, bike and cycle rallies, a Cherry Blossom run, Stunt bike display, traditional food stalls, fashion shows, a Cherry Blossom beauty pageant, bonsai and flower shows, Serenity choir and DJs, musical events, storytelling sessions, drawing and painting competitions.
