AGARTALA: “You’ll never find a rainbow if you’re looking down”, so goes the saying by Charlie Chaplin, the man who did not falter to amaze us with the wonders of his amusement. The world around us is filled with wonders and sometimes, these wonders manifest themselves in certain forms that becomes special in themselves for what or who they are. Tripura, a state in the Northeastern part of India recently witnessed a wedding, which could have been an ordinary one had the bridegroom not been Bijoy Debbarma.
It was the marriage ceremony of Bijoy, a 34-yr-old, 7 feet tall who displayed embarrassment as camera persons flocked the scene to shoot him. It was unusual for the ordinary folks to witness a 7 feet tall exchanging vows with a lady with average height. Bijoy Debbarma, 34, was the only man having the height in his paternal family.
Coming from a very humble background in Champahoar, a tribal hamlet in Tripura’s Khowai District, Bijoy was the only man to get education in his family. He was having vision problem in his childhood for which many had thought he could not do anything better in his life. His family sent him to a visually challenged school in Agartala which perhaps was the turning point of his life.
Luckily, he got a job in Visually Handicapped institute in 2007.
“I had completed my schooling in Institute for Visually Handicapped in Agartala. Though I wanted to pursue higher studies, I could not due to lack of financial support and other problems as well. A large span of my life was spent amidst struggle. However, my life has been settled a little bit after my job,” he said.
He got married to a woman who was a resident of Khowai last month. His wife -Neema Rani Debbarma (28) was only 4 feet and 10 inches. She was a widow and has a seven-year-old daughter from her first marriage.
Neema didn’t continue her studies after Class 10 pre-board exam as her parents had married her off. But her luck was bad as she lost her husband within few years of marriage.
“My parents wanted me to get settled again. We have relatives in Agartala who had given the marriage proposal with him. Later, both the families fixed up the marriage,” she told TNT- The Northeast Today when visited their quarter.
Bijoy is the youngest among four siblings. The rest of his brothers are engaged in farming and small grocery business. When asked, Bijoy said his elder brothers are of normal height, but he had heard that his maternal grandfather was over seven feet tall.
“I am not responsible for my height. The day of my marriage, I was caught by many eyes. I want everybody to treat me as normal human being not as exceptional. It is because, I am also a human being who has aspiration to lead a normal and happy life like others,” he said.
