AGARTALA , APRIL 19 2017: Tripura police has been unable to make any headway in the investigation into the robbery of money from the MGNREGA fund amounting to Rs 18.53 lakh by a group of armed miscreants in the remote village of Pitra under Sepahijala district of West Tripura on Monday.
Two business correspondents of Tripura State Cooperative Bank were carrying the money, meant for labour payment, by an auto-rickshaw. The money was supposed to be disbursed among MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act ) workers in the Thelakum ADC village, as there is no bank branch in the vicinity of the village.
The police, headed by IG (Law & Order) K Sreejesh, have launched a combing operation to arrest the miscreants and recover the looted money but are yet to trace anything.
Besides trained policemen, dog squads were also brought in, said Superintendent of Police (Gomati) Swarasati R.
The police have detained both the bank workers, Rajkumar Jamatia (29) and Gourav Jamatia (28), along with the auto-rickshaw driver, for further questioning.
According to the statement of Rajkumar and Gourav, they had collected the money from Tripura State Cooperative Bank’s Killa Branch and were on their way to Thelakum ADC Village under Jampuijala block when a group of armed gunmen stopped them in a forested area.
