SHILLONG:

The East Khasi Hills (EKH) district police on Monday asked owners of two-wheelers and four-wheelers to remove the retrofitted exhaust pipes, as such modifications cause noise pollution.

According to the EKH Superintendent of Police (SP), S. Nongtnger, there has been a rise in the number of vehicles, both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, which are retrofitted with loud exhaust pipes, causing noise pollution in the city, especially at unearthly hours, violating the Motor Vehicle Act.

The SP further stated that the noise emitted by these exhausts cause inconvenience to residents of the city, including children and senior citizens.

In this regard, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has requested all owners who have retrofitted their exhaust pipes to remove them and replace them with the original exhaust pipes.

The STP would also conduct awareness drives on this issue till April 30.

"Thereafter, violators will be booked under Section 182-A4 of the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2019," the SP said.
