The first Sikkim organic day –commemorating the recognition of Sikkim as first organic state will be celebrated on Jan 18 by the state government at Saramsal Garden, Ranipool.
The celebration will be attended by the chief minister Pawan Chamling as the chief guest said agriculture development and horticulture secretary Khorlo Bhutia, during a press conference on Tuesday.
The agriculture and horticulture development secretary stated that it was on 18th January 2016 that Narendra Modi had visited Sikkim and declared Sikkim as an Organic State. Following the declaration , the state government has decided to observe the day as ‘Sikkim Organic Day’ annually and this January will the first celebration.
The theme for the day is ‘Transforming Agriculture for a better world’.
With an organising budget of around 30 lakhs, the Sikkim organic day will have display, sale and competition of organic produce like flowers, vegetables, spices and fruits .
Around 300 farmers from across the state are participating in the celebration. Various union agencies related with agriculture and horticulture are also participating in the event. The expected footfall is more than 10,000 visitors at the venue. The Agriculture Development secretary stated the journey of Sikkim on organic state started from 2003 where the foundation of organic mission was laid.
The government of india has also provided support on organic farming by introducing Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North east Region and has allocated a fund of about Rs 400 crore, out of which Rs 115 crore is for Sikkim.
