One Step At A Time Towards Making Meghalaya ‘Clean And Green’

SHILLONG: In a cleaner and greener move, the East Khasi Hills district Administration on Wednesday has taken on board 10 localities falling under ‘Census Town’ to be part of its cleanliness movement with an aim to get the locals involved in their struggle to make ‘Meghalaya Clean and Green Again’.

The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District, PS Dkhar, on Wednesday sought the cooperation of 10 census towns in the district in its strive towards a Cleaner Meghalaya, Greener Meghalaya.

This was informed by the DC during a consultation meet organized at MIIT, Dhankheti for the 10 localities falling under Mylliem Development Block.

Lauding the BDO of Mylliem on the initiative which is in line with the Swatch Bharat Mission, the DC said that ‘This programme is organized with a purpose to garner the support of the nearby localities to work together in making our town clean and green.’

Furthermore, he said that their (towns) participation in the consultation meet will also help the government to figure out a way forward with the cooperation and support of the localities to achieve the set goal of making ‘Meghalaya clean and green’.

He also stated that through this programme, the district authority will also get a fair idea of the problems faced by the local people in their struggle towards making their town clean and how to dispose of the waste and unwanted garbage.

Echoing similar views, the BDO of Mylliem Block, PT Passah said that the initiative of holding a meet between the government and all the 10 localities falling under census town is the first of its kind even as he maintained that the move was done with an aim to get the people involved in the cleanliness movement.

He informed that through this meet, it will ease the Block office to organize cleaning drives, distribution of garbage cans stating that the burden to maintain cleanliness will now be shared between the government and the traditional bodies.

On this day, there were also presentations made by eminent speakers — Wanshan Kharkrang, Environmental Engineer from Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, Shillong, Mark West Kharkongor, Consultant of the SBM, PHE, A Marbañiang, Coordinator SBM, Pynursla Block in the presence of the BDO of Shella Bholaganj , AS Mukhim besides others.
