SHILLONG: S K Jain, Special DGP of Meghalaya Police has been given the charge of heading the force and will be taking over as the Meghalaya DGP until a new Police chief is appointed.
Meghalaya DGP Rajiv Mehta’s term ended today and there have been a lot of speculations over an extension to his term. Jain (1984 batch), however, will be retiring after few months and the Meghalaya Police Act says that the next DGP should have the tenure of at least one year. Owing to this, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Mukul Sangma sought an extension to Mehta’s term with the centre but no official confirmation has come in this regard.
Jain will be holding office till the Police commission in a meeting chaired by Sangma sits as early as next week, highly placed officials stated. It may be mentioned that Sangma had written to the MHA seeking Mehta’s extension since May last.
Sangma claimed that in the absence of Mehta, ongoing counter insurgency operations will be affected.
SB Singh (1986 batch), the additional DGP (Law and Order), who has two years in service can emerge as the possible choice of the government for the post of next DGP if the stalemate persists.
