Meghalaya Police foils plans of the ‘most wanted’ criminal in Garo Hills

TURA/ SHILLONG, March 14: The heat of counter insurgency operations in Garo hills is burning the heels of the guerrillas.

Joint coordination of North Garo hills and East Garo hills police along with Special Force-10, 5th MLP Battalion and Alpha-67 CRPF personnel at Alda Cheran village under Songsak Police Station in East Garo Hills led to the arrest of one Sengman Ch Marak alias Miksal .

One Chinese carbine and M-4 rifle along with ammunitions and magazines were recovered which belonged to William A. Sangma and party.


William A. Sangma a hard core criminal who has been involved in many heinous crimes and one of the most wanted by Meghalaya Police and Assam Police. William A. Sangma has been carrying out series of extortions, abduction, kidnapping, murder and rape in two states since last six years.

In 2014, he escaped from Mendipathar Police Station custody and has been on the run from the law since then.

Alongside a hard core cadre of William one Rohit M Sangma alias Gettingson Sangma of Karbi Anglong, Assam was nabbed on 5. 3. 17 after a brief encounter with William  A. Sangma and party at Thapa Darenchi, North Garo Hills during police checking. The arrested Rohit Sangma revealed that William A. Sangma was in the process of floating a new outfit as A’chik Revolutionary Army (ARA) and a few cadres had undergone arms training under William’s guidance.


It is also learnt that the idea of forming A’chik Revolutionary Army (ARA) was hatched when he shared a cell at Shillong jail together with Champion R Sangma, Chairman GNLA.

Intensive counter insurgency operations(CIOps) and efforts of leaders of both church and civil societies have had a heavy hand on various militant groups like AMEF, LAEF, UALA, ASAK, GNLA.
