JOWAI, March 17 2017: In a shocking incident, a 25 year old man was arrested for marrying a minor girl (16), which is against the law and had sexual relationship with her for over a year in West Jaintia Hills.
According to the West Jaintia Hills police, the complaint was lodged not by the parents but the headmaster of a school at Nartiang, where the girl studies.
On Tuesday, the headmaster had registered a complaint with the State Commission for protection of Child Rights and on Thursday, an FIR was lodged with the police and arrest was made on Thursday evening.

The person has been identified as Md. Hakim Ali hailing from Assam and working as a labourer in West Jaintia Hills.
Shockingly, when asked whether the parents are aware of the situation, the police said that the complaint did not come from the parents, which indirectly suggests that they had no problem with the marriage.
“The suspicion aroused when the girl remained absent from school and when enquired the headmaster found out that the girl was illegally married to this person,” Police informed.
“We have arrested Ali and investigation is on,” police added.
According to the police statistics, in the year 2016, no such cases involving child marriage was registered. And in 2015, two such cases were registered, one in North Garo Hills and the other in West Khasi Hills where a minor girl was forced into marriage.
However, when one looks at the overall scenario in the state of Meghalaya, incidents where a girl as young as 14 years old are is carrying a baby is highly prevalent especially in the rural areas.
